This figure shows the MODIS image, More or less in one image we see all the mesoscale cloud forms that have fascinated those of use who have been watching the trades this past year.

Fish:    The big skeletal image near the midde of the image
Flowers: The large scale patches in the easter 2/5ths of the image.
Sugar:     The fine dusting of clouds in the western 1/5 of the image.
Gravel:    Not much of this, which is the word we use for cold-pool organized clouds without extensive stratiform components.

More on the organization on another day, but remember these names, as they will keep coming up this year.

Today, we are sending mostly an organizational email, as there is lots to catch up on. For instance, for this Pre-EUREC4A we have two new instruments on the BCO:

    - Disdro: an optical disdrometer (Opens external link in new windowhttp://bcoweb.mpimet.mpg.de/quicklooks/disdrometer/odm_yesterday.png)
    - BCOHAT: and a shiny new RPG HATPro Radiometer

And the return of an old friend, Katrin (named for Katrin Lehmann who some of you might know)! Katrin, the second K-band radar is looking at askew (at a 60 deg) angle at the same clouds as CORAL, her bigger dished cousin, with the hope of maybe giving us a better polarization signature and two point correlation statistics.

Also we have a group of people on the BCO site, including people from MPI, ETH and DLR. The ETH group (Franziska Aemisegger) is exploring stable water isotopeologue (or however you spell it) measurements, the DLR group (Martin Hagen) is looking for a good place to put a fantastic C-band radar, and the MPI group (Friedhelm Jansen, Raphaela Vogel and Ulrike Kirchner) is looking to make improved humidity measurements, study cold pools and coordinate with our partners at the Museum of Barbados and the Caribbean Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology … among other things.

As for checking out the instrument coverage, you can look at the uptime of the instruments here:

And on the website (Opens external link in new windowhttps://barbados.mpimet.mpg.de) you will notice some updated quicklooks, we will keep on working on improving these over the year, as we are counting down to less than two years before the start of EUREC4A.

That is enough for now…
